John E. Brinson was enlisted March 1, 1863 at Charleston by Capt. Miller. He was assigned to Company C in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. The 21st and two other units were consolidated to form the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. This made what was Co. C of the 21st now Company B of the 7th.

Pvt. Brinson was captured near Trevillian Station, Va. He was imprisoned at Fortress Monroe June 20, 1864. On July 25, 1864 he was transferred to Elmira Prison in New York where he remained until June 21, 1865 when he was released.
