Joseph Marion Lee enlisted in June of 1861 and served initially with the Effingham Hussars of the 5th Ga Cavalry serving as Quarter-Master and Commissary Sergeant. It appears as though he transferred to the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and when the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized through consolidation, he was assigned to Company B of the 7th Georgia Cavalry.

He was captured on June 11, 1864 during the Battle of Trevillian Station at Louisa Court House, Va. He was sent to Pt. Lookout, Md. and transferred to Elmira NY Prison on July 9, 1864 where he remained until October 29,1864 when he was released through an exchange of prisoners.
