J.W. Martin (listed one instance as John N.) enlisted May 15, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Miller. He served in Co. C, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, attaining the rank of 4th Sergeant. With the organization of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, Sgt. Martin was transferred to Co. B of the 7th on February 13, 1864.

In August he was reported absent, in the hands of the enemy, having been captured June 11, 1864 at Louisa Court House during the battle of Trevillian Station.

Sgt. Martin arrived at Fortress Monroe around June 20, 1864 and was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y., arriving there on July 25, 1864.
He was released on July 11, 1865.
