M.H. Mitchum (Mitchom) enlisted November 2, 1862 at Charleston with Capt. Miller. Pvt. Mitchum served with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. C until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. B, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On the March/April roll, Mitchum was detailed to go after a horse and meet the Regiment at the march to Virginia.

During the battle at Trevillian Station, Va., Pvt Mitchum's horse was captured on June 11, 1864. From that time to October, Mitchum was present on roll calls.

On November 17th Pvt. Mitchum was admitted to Jackson Hospital at Richmond - diagnosed as having a kidney disease. He returned to duty on November 25, 1864.
