J.H. Smith enlisted May 7, 1862 transferred to Co. C, 21st Battalion, Ga Cav amd served there until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. B, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Smith was captured June 11, 1864 near Louisa Courthouse, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20, 1864 and was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

As with many men who were at Elmira, Pvt. J.H. Smith died of chronic diarrhoea and was buried in grave # 742.
