J.W.J. Smith enlisted June 25, 1862 at Savannah with Capt. Miller. Pvt. Smith was in Co. C, 21st Battalion, GA Cav until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. B, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

He was present at roll calls through July '64 with the exception of being absent in April for 7 days. He had no horse from the early days of the 7th Rgmt. He was sick in the hospital which appears to have been in August.

Pvt. Smith drew pay for two months for $24 from Post Q.M. at Heuguenot Springs (date not shown). He was had a clothing issue in the late fall of 1864.
