J.L. Southwell enlisted June 10, 1862 at Savannah with Capt. Miller. Pvt. Southwell was in Co. C, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. B, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Southwell was shown as being absent without leave at some time in April. On the May/August roll shows where he was detailed at home by order of General Mercer. He was present with the 7th on the September/October roll. He received a clothing issue in late fall of 1864.
