J.W. Ginn began his military career August 1861 in Elbert County, Ga.

When units were consolidated to form the 7th, Ginn had been with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry since June 1863 and on February 13, 1864 was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On the September/October roll, listed as present without horse, being lost in action along with the saddle, bridle, halter and saber.

Pvt. Ginn surrendered and was paroled May 19, 1865 at Hartwell, Ga.
