G.W. Martin was enlisted by O.L. Buffington on June 12, 1862 in Hall County, Ga. in Co. B, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and went on to the 7th Georgia Cavalry, Co. C, through consolidation of units on February 13, 1864.

On June 11, 1864 Pvt. Martin was captured at Louisa Court House during the battle of Trevillian Station. He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20 and then transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y., arriving there on July 25, 1864.

He died at Elmira on September 29, 1864 caused by chronic diarrhea. Pvt. G.W. Martin was listed as having no effects and was buried in grave # 498.
