S.A. McIntosh enlisted September 1862 in Elberton , Ga. with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry.

When units were consolidated to form the 7th on February 13, 1864 he was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

In December 1864 he was detailed along with about 200 other members of the 7th under the command of Col. E.C. Anderson to return to Georgia dismounted to get fresh horses. While still without horses they fought defending Savannah against Sherman.

Private McIntosh surrendered after the end of the war at Charlotte, N.C.
