W.E.A. Murphy enlisted January 26, 1864 at Camp Semmes. Pvt. Murphy served a short time with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. C until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Murphy received a furlough in April '64 with orders to report to Columbia on May 6, 1864.

On June 11, 1864 near Franklin Station, Va. at Trevillian Station, Pvt. W.E.A. Murphy was killed in action. His mother, Mary Murphy was his Legal Representative.
