Vandiver C. Nelms, born in Elbert County, Ga., enlisted at Elberton as 4th Corporal in the 15th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. He was discharged November 1861.

Re-enlisted September 19, 1862 in Co. B, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. Appointed Sergeant. On February 13, 1864 he was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, remaining as Sergeant.

Sgt. Nelms surrendered April 9, 1865 with General Lee at Appomattox, Va.
