F.O. Smith enlisted June 12, 1863 at Camp Lee with Capt. Davies. Pvt. Smith was in Co. B, 24th Bttn, Ga Cav until February 13, 1864 when the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized through consolidation, Co. B of the 24th was then Co. C of the 7th.

Pvt. Smith's records show that he was present until August '64. He was sick in hospital in August and September, again in December when he was admitted to General Hospital # 9. He was then moved to Jackson Hospital where he died January 5, 1865. No cause was listed.

There was one descrepancy on the notice of the death...he was listed as being in 7th Rgmt, Ga. Inf.
