James A. Smith (H.J.A.) enlisted May 17, 1862 in Elbert County. Pvt. Smith was in Co. B, 24th Battalion, Ga Cav until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.
On the March roll, he was listed as being absent without leave in Elbert County since March 12, '64. Afterwards, he was present on roll calls through October. He lost his horse in August.
