J.R. Winfrey enlisted June 21, 1862 in Madison County, Ga. with Lt. Davies. Pvt. Winfrey served in Co. B, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Winfrey was listed as being present at roll calls through October. In June 11, 1864 his horse was captured during the battle at Trevillian Station, Va. He was remounted on August the 5th and was without horse again on October 8th. His saddle, bridle, halter and saber were also lost in action.
