J.F. Butler, at age 41, enlisted at Bryan County, Ga. in 1863 and served with Co. C, 24 Battalion, Georgia Cavalry.

Through the consolidation of units he was transferred to Company D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on February 13, 1864.

Surrendered 1865.
