David Cason enlisted in Company A, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry Sept 22, 1862. He later transferred to Company C, while serving with the 24th. When the 7th Regiment was created through the consolidation of the 24th, 21st, and Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Pvt. Cason was assigned to Company D of the 7th.

He was consistantly present at roll calls and in mid May lost his horse. In late August he was listed as sick and was sent to Pettigrew Hospital at Raleigh, N.C. where he stayed until October 2nd. Pvt. Cason continued to serve with the 7th for the duration of the war.

After the was he was paroled at Thomasville, Ga. where his parole papers included the following.
