John W. Davenport enlisted September 22, 1862 at Camp Fort with Capt. Hopkins. Pvt. Davenport served in Co. A and later Co. C, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Davenport was absent, on special 15 day service, 18, April, 1864. Davenport was captured June 11, 1864 during the Battle of Trevillian Station. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20th and on the 25th of July, transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. John W. Davenport was released June 14, 1865. The description given him: residence, Brunswick; complexion, fair; hair, light; eyes, grey; height, 5 feet 7 inches.
