J.J. Head enlisted September 15, 1862 in Hall County. Pvt. Head was with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B and later Co. C until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Head was listed as being present on roll calls until he became sick in June of '64. He was in the hospital at Richmond from June 20th to July 10th diagnosed with gastritis. Having recovered, he continued serving in Co. D. In September or October, he lost his horse.
