Robert Middleton Heard of Elbert County, Ga. enlisted in 15th Regiment, Georgia Infantry as 1st Lieutenant July 15,1861 . Elected Captain May 21, 1862 . Resigned July 11, 1862 .

He enlisted and was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Co. C, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry February 19, 1863. He was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry February 13, 1864.

Lt. Heard was wounded at McDowell's Farm, Va., September 29, 1864 with a shot in the left leg which left him disabled.
