W.A. Johnson enlisted March 12, 1863 at Camp Mercer with Capt. R.H. Wylly. Pvt. Johnson was in Co. C, 24th Bttn, Ga Cav until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

During the Battle of Trevillain Station, Johnson's horse was killed in action.

Pvt. Johnson was admitted to Jackson Hospital at Richmond, diagnosed with febris and diarrhoea. He was furloughed for 60 days from December 4th and received a passport to Augusta. It appears that when in route to Augusta he was admitted September 12th in hospital at Wilmington N.C. and returned to duty the next day. While in Wilmington he was ordered to report to the Surg. Gen. for assignment to duty as a fisherman.
