Thomas Joseph Merritt was born in Hall County on January 20, 1826. He enlisted there on December 3, 1862 where he served as corporal in Co. B and C, 24th Battalion. He was tranferred to Co. D of the 7th Georgia Cavalry and was promoted to sergeant from 1st corporal on September 1, 1864.

Sgt. Merritt was in General Hospital # 12 in Greensboro, N.C. at the close of the war and was paroled from there on April 28, 1865.

His eldest son, Elisha W. Merritt, served in Co. B, 11th Ga. Calvary.
E.A. Merritt of the 7th, Co. D, was his younger brother.

Sgt. Thomas J. Merritt died on December 1, 1893 and was buried at the Oakgrove Baptist Church in Hall County.
