J.S. Owens enlisted December 3, 1862 in Hall County. He was with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B and then C until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Owens was present at all roll calls until October when he was sick, absent. In August 22, 1865 he received amnesty at Gainesville, Ga.

His description : residence, Hall County; complexion, fair; hair, dark; eyes, hazel and height 5 feet 10 inches.
