M.L. Simmons served in the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry in Co. B and then in Co. C.

When the 7th Ga Cavalry was organized on February, 13, 1864, he was transferred to company D of the 7th.

Pvt. Simmons was captured Oct 27, 1864 and taken to City Point, processed there and sent to Pt. Lookout where he died of complications from measles (most likely pneumonia) on April 5th or 6th, 1865 and was buried there.
