Mantues B. Smith served in Co. A then Co. C, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Cpl. Smith was captured June 22, 1864 near Clarkesville, N.C. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. and then forwarded to Point Lookout, Md.

Cpl. M.B. Smith was chosen for exchange, was transferred for the exchange on March 14, 1865 and was paroled at Point Lookout. He was then sent to Aiken's Landing, Va. for the exchange.
