M. Sterling enlisted December 23, 1863 at Decatur, Ga. He was in Co. C, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

No dates, listed as present without horse and some sickness in camp. On August 19, '64 Pvt Sterling was admitted to Jackson Hospital in Richmond with chronic diarrhoea. He was hospitalized again in late October or early November and was furloughed for 30 days on November 3, 1864.
