William Thornton enlisted September 22, 1862 at Camp Fort, Ga. with Capt Hopkins. Pvt. Thornton served in Co. A, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Thornton was present at all roll calls until July when he was admitted to a hospital with acute diarrhoea. He returned to duty August the 4th of '64 and was granted a 30 day furlough.

Pvt. William Thornton was captured (no indication as to where nor when). He was released May 19, 1865. His description: hair, dark; eyes, blue; complexion, fair; height, 5 ft. 81/2 inches.
