F.D. Wainright enlisted September 22, 1862 at Camp Fort, Ga. wiith Capt. Hopkins. Cpl. Wainright was in Co. A and later Co. C, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Cpl. Wainright was present on roll calls through October. He lost his horse on June 11, 1864 during the Battle at Trevillian Station. F.D. Wainright entered the 7th as 3rd Cpl. and in September was promoted to 1st Cpl. and a short time afterwards was promoted to 4th Sgt.
