Benjamin Atwood served as a sergeant in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and when the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was formed, he was assigned to Co. E of the 7th.

Sgt. Benjamin (Benj) Atwood served the duration of the war with the 7th and surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865 with General Lee.

He and his wife are buried in Candler Co. GA at what is called the Atwood-Jones Cemetery located close to Grady's Truck Stop on I-16.
