J.F. Brannen enlisted May 15, 1862 by Capt. Banks at Savannah. He served in Company B of the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. The consolidation of units put Brannen in Company E of the 7th.

On April 18, 1864 he was listed as being absent to rejoin the company at Augusta. Pvt. Brannen was listed as present thereafter. He lost his horse in late August and remained without one. In late fall, probably December he received a clothing issue.
