John D. Calhoun (Calhoon) was enlisted by Capt. Banks at Savannah June 30, 1862 in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He served in Company B of the 21st until, through consolidation of units which formed the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry he was transferred to Co. E of the 7th.
He was listed as being present on all roll calls through October 1864 and was shown on a clothing issue in late fall of 1864. Very few records were available afterwards.
Pvt. Calhoun surrendered at Tallahassee on May 10, 1865 and was paroled at Albany May 26, 1865.
