James Donaldson enlisted May 13, 1862 at Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Donaldson was with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Donaldson was given leave on April 18, 1864 with instructions to rejoin the Company at Augusta. On the May/August roll calls, he was listed as sick, in hospital. The September/October roll has him as present.

In late fall '64 he received a clothing issue. Pvt. Donaldson received a pay voucher for 2 months for the total of $24.00.

Pvt. James Donaldson surrendered and was paroled May 13, 1865 at Thomasville.
