William Donaldson enlisted May 13, 1862 at Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Donaldson was with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Donaldson took leave without approval on April 18th, '64. He was present on May 1st and June 1st rolls. He was captured June 11, 1864 near Louisa Courthouse, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe June 20th and on July 27, transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

On July 7, 1865 he was released from Elmira. The description given follows: complexion, fair; hair, dark; eyes, blue; height, 5 ft. 11 inches.
