F.A. Exley enlisted May 13, 1862 at Savannah and served in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He was transferred to 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, Co. E on February 13, 1864.

His records showed him as being present until June 11, 1864 when he was captured near Louisa Courthouse, Va. Pvt. F.A. Exley was imprisoned at Elmira Prison in New York until July 7, 1865.

His description when released: residence, Savannah; complexion, fair; hair, dark; eyes, grey; heighe, 5 feet 6 inches.
