R.J. Helmly enlisted May 13, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Helmly served in Co. B, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.
Helmly's records show that he was sick for a short time in April of '64. Otherwise, he was present on all roll calls.
Pvt. R.J. Helmly surrendered April 9, 1865 at Appomattox, Va. along with General Lee.
