James E. Hester enlisted May 13, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Hester was in Co. B, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Roll calls show Pvt. Hester as being present through October 1864 with the exception of being in Jackson Hospital near Richmond for about 18 days. He had an injury to his left hand and returned to duty July 11, 1864. On August 1st, he lost his horse.
