Pvt. Hester was captured June 11, 1864 near Louisa Courthouse, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. on June 20th and on July 25 was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.
On March 2, 1865, Pvt Hester was transferred for exchange and was sent to James River, Va. and released. He was received and sent to General Hospital #9 at Richmond diagnosed with debilitas (weakened condition). He was furloughed March 9th for 30 days.
