Joseph Hester enlisted July 4, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Hester was with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Hester was present on roll calls through October. In early December he received a clothing issue.

It is obvious that he was captured about the time Sherman and his 60,000 took Savannah although it is not stated. Records show that he was admitted to 1st Division Hospital on December 24th with remittant fever. He was sent to General Hospital January 16, 1865 and admitted on the 19th at Savannah, diagnosed with chronic diarrhoea. No further records.
