John Mercer enlisted January 26, 1864 at Georgetown, S.C. with Capt. Harrison. For a short time Pvt. Mercer was with 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Mercer received a leave on April 18, '64 and to rejoin the company at Augusta. On June 11, 1864 he was captured at Louisa Courthouse, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe June 20th and on to Point Lookout, Md. (There was a mention of Elmira Prison but I feel that he didn't go there.)

Pvt. John Mercer died August 6, 1864.
