C. E. Zipperer enlisted November 10, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. He served in Co. B, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and on April 10, 1863 was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant. Through consolidation of units, Lt. Zipperer was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry February 13, 1864.

In late April 1864 he received a 10 day leave. Lt. Zipperer was captured at Louisa Courthouse, Va. during the battle of Trevillian Station on June 11, 1864. He was first sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. on June 20th then on June 23rd was transferred to Fort Delaware.

Lt. Zipperer was released June 4, 1865 at Ft. Delaware. His description upon leaving follows: residence, Effingham County, Ga.; complexion, ruddy; hair, brown; eyes, blue; height, 5 ft. 8 inches.
