John D. Marlow enlisted with Capt. Banks in Savannah on May 13, 1862. He served in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B then moved to Co. E as Sergeant. When the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized, Sgt. Marlow was transferred to Co. F of the 7th.

On the August 1864 pay record, he was paid for himself for 2 months, his horse listed as captured on June 11, 1864 during the battle of Trevillian Station. In October he was listed as absent on a 60 day detail, still without a horse.
