John C. Peteet enlisted in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Company B on September 18, 1864. He later transferred to Co. E. When the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized through consolidation of units, he was assigned to Company F of the 7th.

Pvt. Peteet was listed as present until October 27, 1864 when captured near Petersburg, Va. He was received at City Point, Va. October 31st. He was transferred to Point Lookout, Md. and on June 17, 1865 was released.

On John C. Peteet's release papers it was stated that his residence was Madison, Ga. His description as follows: dark complexion, black hair, dark hazel eyes and height 5 ft - 73/4 inches.
