Joseph M. Brown enlisted September 22, 1862 at Waynesville. Capt. Hopkins assigned Pvt. Brown to Company A, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. When the 24th became a part of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A of the 24th then became Company G of the 7th.

There is no details but Brown was in arrest at Oglethorpe Barracks in April 1864. On the May roll he was present and in August he was admitted in Confederate States Hospital at Petersburg, Va. Pvt. Brown was present September and October. He lost his horse in October.
