J.D. Carter enlisted in Company A, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry at Waynesville Sept 22, 1862 with Capt. Hopkins. He served with the 24th until February 13, 1864 when the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized. At that time, Pvt. Carter was assigned to Co. G of the 7th.

He served through the war and it appears that he had little or no problems with his health.

After wars end J.D. Carter was parolled at Thomasville May 10, 1865. The following description was given him:
Height - 5ft. 9in., Light Hair, Blue Eyes and Light Complexion.
