M.L. Crewes (Crews) enlisted September 22, 1862 at Waynesville with Capt. Hopkins. Pvt. Crewes was with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. G, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Crewes was present on all roll calls through May 1864. He was captured June 11, '64 near Louisa Courthouse, Va., was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20th and transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. on July 25th of 1864.

As many men did, Pvt. M.L. Crewes died at Elmira diagnosed as chronic diarrhoea. He was buried in grave # 610.
