John W. Lewis enlisted Sept 22, 1862 at Waynesville with Capt. Hopkins. Cpl. Lewis was with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. G, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On April 27, 1864 Lewis was promoted from 1st Corporal to 5th Sgt. J.W. Lewis. He was captured June 11, 1864 near Trevillian Station, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th and transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. July 25, '64.

Sgt. John W. Lewis was transferred for exchange October 11th and was exchanged October 19, 1864. Nothing further.
