John J. Nettles enlisted September 22, 1863 at Waynesville with Capt. Hopkins. Pvt. Nettles was in Co. A., 24th Battalion, Ga Cav until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. G, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

He was listed as being present on roll calls through May '64. On June 11, 1864 Pvt. Nettles was captured during the Battle of Trevillian Station. He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th and on July 25th transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. John J. Nettles was paroled from Elmira on June 21, 1865. Upon his release, his description was as follows: residence, Screven (? town or county); complexion, dark; hair, dark; eyes, blue, height, 5 feet 8 inches.
