J.W. Wilcox enlisted September 22, 1862 at Waynesville with Capt. Hopkins. Pvt. Wilcox served in Co. A, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. G, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

J.W. Wilcox was promoted to 4th Cpl. from the ranks on April 27, 1864.

Cpl. Wilcox was captured near Louisa Courthouse, Va. on June 11, 1864 during the Battle of Trevillian Station. He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th and on July 25th was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

On June 23, 1865, Cpl. J.W. Wilcox was released from Elmira. His description when leaving: residence, Blackshire, Ga.; complexion, fair; hair, red; eyes, blue; height, 5 ft. 7 inches.
