Pvt. Wingate was captured June 11, 1864 during the Battle of Trevillian Station, Va. at Louisa Court House. He was sent to Fortress Monroe June 20th and transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. July 25th.
He was chosen to be exchanged on October 11, 1864. In route to be exchanged, he was hospitalized at Baltimore, Md., diagnosed with chronic diaarhoea. He was treated with tonics, stimulents, and astringents with no success.
Pvt. W.H. Wingate of Burke County, Ga. died October 21, 1864.
