William D. Youmans enlisted September 22, 1862 at Waynesville with Capt. Hopkins. Pvt. Youmans served in Co. A, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. G, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Youmans was present at roll calls until June 4, 1864 when he was admitted to General Hospital at Danville, Va. and returned to duty on the 10th of June. He was again in hospital, Wayside at Farmville on June 22nd. He was diagnosed with debilitas (extreme weakness) and of acute diarrhoea. He returned to duty on September 7th.

He was paroled at Thomasville in May10, 1865.
